It’s fair to say I met some incredible people that weekend. One, of whom, was the unforgettable Drew Cruck… of Drew Kruck Vs Gold Coast.
Drew is a real salt of the earth type. He reminds me of my childhood… knocking around at the local footy club (my brothers were both keen Aussie Rules fans and we spent the best part of every weekend at a game, or at a function) with a bunch of ‘brothers from other mothers’.
Growing up there was never a shortage of ‘good Aussie blokes’ and Drew is absolutely one of those guys… he makes you feel like you’ve known him for years. The kind of guy you walk away from and ask yourself, ‘do I know him from somewhere?’
Earlier this year, Drew decided it would be cool to share the stories of some of the interesting characters he knows, from the Gold Coast. He built a portable podcasting studio out of a caravan (it’s cool as fuck… and I’m so, so, so jealous… I’ve always wanted a ‘portable booth’) and he started driving it up and down the coast, interviewing people he knew.
Drew has talked to people from all walks of life… even his own father. Boxers, models, radio presenters, entrepreneurs, entertainers, artists… anyone with an interesting or inspiring tale to tell. He started the podcast because he wants to share stories of special people and create a kind of digital legacy for future generations.
It’s not fancy. Fuck all editing (well, it appears that way because it maintains a good sense of ‘real and raw’… however I’m sure there’s plenty of editing) and he’s having great success. He’s funny… he’s enthusiastic… he’s infectious… and he has got a heart of gold. And all of this comes through in his podcast.
The moral of the story? You don’t have to be polished… or more professional… or anything other than YOU.
Drew is a top bloke. His success in the podcasting game comes down to the fact he had an idea (as crazy as it seemed) and he gave it a crack… he shows up at the mic as himself… with his rad personality and his ‘why’ close at hand. There’s no way this could be anything other than a huge success.
And that’s what a good podcast is all about. Backing yourself… and bringing YOU to what you do.
Here’s a little more about Drew as on 7:30.
